some thoughts on three

Quite honestly, I didn't know that it could get any better. Nolan has been the most wonderful child for three years now. A constant source of joy and frustration, but most of all snuggles. We had a fantastic trip to Tennessee for our much needed relaxation and to celebrate Nolan's birthday with many of his family and friends.

After all of the festivities and presents, Nolan declared at the end of the day on his actual birthday, the 6th, that he was now FOUR years old. He's a sneaky little boy who knows the good things in life!

Today he got a balloon in the mail that I blew up for him (after much squeaking and letting the air out). He was enjoying bouncing it, shrieking with his toddler laughter, when he asked for a string naturally to tie onto the end. I found something appropriate, but then poor Nolan was practically moved to tears when he realized that it wouldn't float! He thought there was some magical property in the string that made it float! I had to explain to him about helium and then figure out other fantastical ways to enjoy a balloon that sunk. I love watching his logic develop. Another instance was on our arrival to his grandparents. We walked in and he immediately wanted to know where the bathroom was. I thought this was so he could plan out his potty breaks, but after seeing the first two and him asking where's the tub, I wasn't so sure. Finally we got to the third and last bathroom with a tub and he says that he wants to take a bath. He wanted to try out his brand new pontoon plane and was on a mission to see it float! It just took me a while to catch on to what that mission was.

The pretending and creative play has been therapeutic for me as much as a crucial stage in Nolan's development. Recently, anything that moves has a new trademark noise as it roams about. Boats say, "boat-boat-boat," submarines say "sub-sub-submarine," airplanes say "airplane-airplane-airplane" and whales say, you guessed it, "whale-whale-whale...." It's much cuter to hear him say it.
