fish experiment

We got a fish as a party favor from a birthday party for a little boy. The mother did tell me, "You're going to hate me later." It was a complex gift... a tropical fish that we knew we couldn't keep alive for long. It came complete with food, aquarium rocks and a small fish bowl. Nolan was thrilled needless to say. He held and talked to the fish the whole way home, saying "We're not going to eat you, just look at you." This came from an experience the prior day when we were at the beach at the lake and a man was carrying a three foot fish by it's gill and Nolan wondered what was going on. So I told that some people like to catch fish and eat them. The fish was with us a week and quietly slipped away. Nolan hasn't asked why it isn't around anymore. Dodged that bullet for a while. He's bothered enough by dead bugs in the windows. He asked me why a bug wasn't moving so I explained it was dead and couldn't move anymore, to which he replied, "No it's not." Denial is the first stage of grieving.
