discoveries

another week of work down and my first night on call at the hospital since Nolan was born, too. obviously John is doing a tremendous job keeping Nolan happy because he's learned so much in the past week. it's so hard to leave Nolan in the morning since he's always cooing his baby alphabet that time of day. he moves his lips and tongue it seems so purposefully trying to mimic talking and makes numerous sounds... it's hard to translate them into our alphabet, but it's something like "nlah, nloh, uuu, auh." i put my parents on the phone this morning so maybe they could hear it.

he sleeps pretty consistently now from 10 pm to 4 or 5 am and did that while i was on call for John. thankfully it wasn't a busy night (until 1 am) so i got to hang out with the boys and feed Nolan a couple times before i really went to work. last night i put Nolan down on our bed so i could swaddle him and get him to take his 8 o'clock nap (he never stays asleep at this time yet...) and he discovered his thumb and went to town sucking it and put himself to sleep in a minute or two. i just watched in amazement how peaceful he was and thought, just this once he can suck on his thumb... watch me let him turn into a thumb sucker... it's so cute!

he also discovered a toy i put by his changing table and seems to realize he's touching and moving it. he got so excited by it and really focused! all these developments are so amazing they practically move me to tears... it's just watching a human come out it's shell. we also got Nolan a Christmas tree (like he cares now) that we can plant later.

ps- while i was typing this Nolan was napping but had woken up, when i looked over he was sucking his thumb... we're in for it.
