Nolan will actually be turning four on the 6th, but being a Wednesday and all... we had to explain this to Nolan about why he gets a party on a day that is not his birthday. Of course now he expects another cake just like this one. We managed to surprise him with the rocket ship cake. He instantly recognized it as the one from a Grand Day Out with Wallace & Gromit!
He found me putting the finishing touches on his cape, which was fine as it became his birthday cape. He wore it for most of the afternoon and evening saying he was Super Nolan or Superwhy (from PBS). It was lovely hearing his toddler ramblings about how it can make him fly, but not in the traditional sense because he has to "boing" on something first to make him go up in the air. He asked quite sincerely if he really could fly with it and I saw for a moment the genuine daydream of a child to fly. He was quiet in his own world for a bit, during which I can only think he was imagining himself flying.
He loved seeing his friends and didn't want them to leave. We all had a great time really, and Nico slept the whole evening in mine or in the arms of an adoring guest.
